Immortal Ever After is the eighteenth installment in Lynsay Sand’s Argeneau series.  As the title hints at, Immortal Ever After is a book about vampires…but maybe not the ones you were expecting.  The vamps (or, should I say, “immortals”) of the Argeneau series are not of the soulless, undead, Bram Stoker-esque variety.  Instead, they are the product of science.  Or, more specifically, the product of ancient, Atlantean-created nanos which extend the life of their host to near immortality, all the while keeping him or her in a constant state of optimal health and peak physical condition.  And all the host has to do is maintain a healthy diet of blood…

Immortal Ever After tells the story of Valerie Moyer, a vet from Winnipeg who makes a temporary move back to Ontario in order to avoid a soon-to-be-married ex-boyfriend.  Valerie is getting by just fine until she is kidnapped and held hostage by a fanged psychopath who thinks he’s a vampire. She manages to escape and is whisked away to a safe house to be guarded by the compelling, handsome Anders…who just so happens to come equipped with his own pair of fangs.

Anders has appeared in previous installments as a mysterious, often-brooding Enforcer.  In Immortal Ever After, we see him cautiously begin to open up as he tries not only too woo Valerie but also to convince her that he is not the soulless, blood-sucking demon that her previous experience may paint him as.  He and Valerie have great chemistry and I thoroughly enjoyed their scenes together—from the heartfelt to the humorous.

I started reading the Argeneau series almost a decade ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. Despite being such a long-running series (book #32 is scheduled for release at the end of April) Sands manages to keep things fresh and effortlessly humorous.  All in all, I think this may just be my favourite book in the series so far and I can’t wait to read the next one.
