One Poison Pie is a paranormal cozy mystery. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the genre, a cozy mystery typically features an amateur sleuth–usually just an ordinary member of society, like a teacher, a bookshop owner or, in this case, a kind kitchen witch. This ordinary person is thrust into an extraordinary circumstance brought on by the heinous killing of an innocent person. The would-be detective, surrounded by an endearingly eccentric supporting cast, must follow a trail of clues and solve the crime before anyone else gets hurt.*

Mia Malone is making a new life for herself in Magic Springs, Idaho. Just as she’s settling in and getting ready to open her own catering service—where each of the recipes contains a touch of her kitchen witch magic—her very first client turns up dead. To her great surprise, Mia discovers that she herself is a suspect. In order to prove her innocence, she must find out which of the town’s residents committed the heinous crime.

I only discovered the cozy mystery genre a couple of years ago, but it’s one I find myself returning time and time again. Similarly, I predict that Lynn Cahoon will become an author that I also keep on coming back to. Her words flow in such a way that allows the reader to really picture what’s happening and to fully immerse themselves in the story. This makes for a quick, fun read. I’m also a huge fan of the paranormal genre and I really enjoyed the way the author wove Mia’s kitchen witch magic into the story.

I read the prequel to this novella a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I liked Mia and her grandmother’s characters immediately and I really enjoyed their presence in this book as well. Additionally, I enjoyed the detective/sidekick dynamic between Mia and Christina. The inclusion of two prospective romances was a nice touch as well.

All in all, this book was a fairly quick and super enjoyable read. There was a long list of potential killers and enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing the whole way through. If you’re a cozy mystery fan, you’re going to love this one. And, if you’ve already had the pleasure of reading One Poison Pie and are dying to read part two, fear not—Two Wicked Desserts hits shelves on July 27!

If you missed my review of the prequel to this series, Chili Cauldron Curse, check it out here.

  1. Thanks for this review, Rebecca. Though Cozies are not my usual reading genre, I too am a huge fan of the paranormal category, especially one with an intriguing “who done it” theme, and from your description, I think this novella will be a fascinating and pleasant read.
